The coastal and marine ecosystems are characterised by common resource use practices of communities dependant on the ecosystem as well as their unique lifestyle and cultural links with the resources. The rights over these resources are nebulous. While there are some existing legal and policy frameworks protecting these ecosystems and traditional livelihoods, often they are overlooked for facilitating the construction of large infrastructural and development projects There is an antipathy amongst the government and related institutions that results in destruction of rich ecosystems and livelihoods.
